A 10 day telescope making workshop kicked off today. During the workshop students will learn how to build a telescope from the scratch under the guidance of a telescope expert from IUCAA, Pune, Mr. Tushar Purohit. Mr. Purohit is having 19 years of experience in Telescope making and astronomy. Today on the first day students started working on grinding of concave mirrors for their telescopes . They did grinding of mirrors using silicon carbide (120, 220) and also calculated the curvature and focal length of mirrors. In the coming days they will learn how to smooth surface of mirrors, techniques of polishing, coating, pitching and assembling of telescope followed by Sky Gazing.
