Innovation and Thinking

Fostering Thinking Skills First Think Lab in the region

Region’s first Think Lab, was inaugurated on 23rd December 2017. Think Lab is a workspace where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands-on, do-it-yourself mode and learn innovation skills. Young children get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

The main objective of think lab is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds; and
inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing
etc.

The lab has been envisaged to be the hub for innovation, invention, making, tinkering and giving shape
to ideas solving local and global problems using technology. It unleashes student’s entrepreneurial spirit and ignite their inner innovator.

Think Lab contains educational kits and age appropriate equipment on – electronics, soldering, sensors, Arduino, raspberry pi, 3D printers, internet of things, drones, robotics, wood and carpentry work, lathe machine work, drilling work, hand and power tools for projects etc., to create technology innovations for applications in multiple sectors. Students also get an opportunity to work on real-time projects including artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Projects

Basics of Electronics

In this section, student learned about the bread-board, LED, batteries and many components related to electronics. They also made some temporary circuits using breadboards which included lightning of LED, automatic street lights and learned about the series parallel connection. They performed the experiments related to switches to learn how to place the switch in the circuit. The basic part also included the soldering of components on general purpose board. They learned to use soldering iron and understood how to make the permanent circuit boards.

Automatic Bubble Blower

Students made a functioning bubble blower which bubbles up the soap water after particular intervals. In this project, students used a small propeller, DC motor and servo motors.

LED Cube

In this project students built up a 4*4*4 LED Cube. The lighting patterns in the LED Cube are controlled by Arduino Uno based on the program loaded into it.

Hand Gesture Control Robot

Hand gesture recognition robot, follows the commands made by hand gestures. This robot is made using transmitter circuits, accelerometer sensor and Arduino as the programming platform.

‘Otto’- The Robot

Otto walks, dances, makes sounds and avoids obstacles. Otto is a combination of Arduino, 3D printable structure, servo motors and batteries. This project provided students the perfect opportunity to learn robotics and assemble their first robot. They understood how to make logical connection between code and action, and how various components and electronics work.

Smart Blind Sticks

In this project students have developed Blind Sticks for visually impaired/blind people. They have used different sensors so that whenever any obstacle or person comes in front of a blind person, the stick automatically vibrates and starts buzzing to help the person. Students are further doing research and are trying to add GPS and GSM technology so that family members of the blind person can detect his live location.

Smart Dustbin

Students have made smart dustbin which opens automatically once the person comes in front of it. It closes after some time. In further extension of this project students have started research and
development i.e. how they can use Internet of Things (IOT's) and get info about wet and dry garbage, level of garbage in dustbins etc.

3D Printer

Students have learnt about designing using software, 3D Printer technology, filament used in 3D Printer and how to operate it. They have designed and printed different projects using 3D printer like Rocket model, Dice, Taj Mahal etc. The most exciting project they made was the *Dancing Robot* using 3D printer and interfacing it using different sensors.

Wood Work Project

Students made their first wood work project. They designed the beautiful bamboo lamps. They were
very excited to use hand and mechanical tools like hammer, axe-saw for cutting wood/bamboo
cylinders, and chisel for the first time. In addition, they used drill machine for drilling and made electric LED panels for fitting inside the bamboo lamp. After cutting, sanding, drilling and fixing the entire arrangement they varnished the lamps. In the end, they tested the bamboo lamp for the functionality.

Environmental Monitoring System

Environmental monitoring system uses temperature, humidity, light, pressure and gas sensors. In this project Bluetooth sensors are used as a communication module in order to get live environmental data using the Mobile app.

Drone Technology

Students of senior group learning about different subsystems (board, esc, motors, propellers etc.) used in drones and assembling them to make it functional.

Robotics

creative thinking

Students have made Free Running robot, Line Follower robot, Obstacle Detection robot using different sensors, programming, motors and other equipment.
